Picture this:
You’re slouched on your sofa, eyes red and sore from crying. Your chest rises and falls with shaky breaths as you whisper, “What have I done? Ya Rabb, why does it feel like I’m being punished?”
Allah does not punish the one who turns to Him in sincere repentance.
You have cried out to Al-Affuw, the Pardoner. You have repented. You’ve begged for forgiveness. Yet the temptations still pull at you, again and again. It’s as if the moment you turned back to Allah, the tests multiplied. You begin to wonder:
“Maybe I’ve sinned too much to be forgiven.”
“Maybe this is punishment.”
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155):
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits – but give good tidings to the patient.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155, Sahih International)
The 2nd verse of Ankaboot seems more apt in this context as it touches on the fact that the mere fact that we profess Iman and devote worship to Allah alone does not mean we will not be tested with trials, tribulations, and whispers from shaytan putting our faith to test, the purpose of which is to test the truthfulness of our resolve.
This isn’t punishment. It’s a test, a purification. A mercy in disguise. Sometimes, the storm isn’t sent to break you, but to wash you clean. Every tear you cry, every urge you resist, every time you fall and still find the strength to return to Allah is a step closer to Him. That is not punishment. That is love. That is purification. Allah never promised the road back to Him would be easy, but He did promise it would be worth it.
These struggles are not signs of rejection, they are signs of refinement. You are not being punished; you are being polished, cleansed of the sins that weigh heavy on your soul, and molded into someone stronger in faith, steadier in sujood, and closer to their Rabb than ever before. So hold on. And trust that the One who created your heart also hears its every cry.
The test is temporary, but His mercy is everlasting.
Hold on. Be patient.
And never think that you have sinned too much to be forgiven. Allah’s SWT mercy is endless. It has no beginning or end.
Allah SWT says in Suratul Al-An’aam verse 54;
“And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, “Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself – indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.”
Also, in Quran 39:53, He lovingly assures;
“Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
Allah SWT does not charge a soul except that which it can bear. As long as you keep your tongue moist with his remembrance and your heart vibrant with his awe and adulation, you will always find his mercy in everything you do.
