Recently, I received a message from a sister who attended a gathering where it was said that only married women are prohibited from going out wearing perfume -implying that unmarried or single women are exempt from this ruling.
This statement is deeply incorrect and must be addressed with care and clarity.
First and foremost, speaking about Islam without sound knowledge is a serious offense. Misrepresenting the teachings of Islam not only misguides others but is also a major sin. As Muslims, we must be cautious about who we take our knowledge from and ensure that what we share aligns with the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.
What Does Islam Actually Say?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Any woman who applies perfume and then goes out so that men can smell it is an adulteress.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i, 5126 | Graded Hasan by Al-Albani)
This Hadith is general, it applies to all Muslim women, married or unmarried. Nowhere in the Hadith is a distinction made based on marital status. The wisdom behind this teaching is to preserve modesty and to avoid actions that may draw inappropriate attention or lead to fitnah.
So What Is Permissible?
Wearing perfume is allowed inside the home, in all-female gatherings, or in the presence of Mahrams. The restriction applies only when a woman goes out in public where non-mahram men may perceive her scent.
A Word of Caution for Those Who Speak Without Knowledge
Allah warns us in the Qur’an:
“And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, ‘This is lawful and this is unlawful,’ to invent falsehood about Allah. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed.”
(Qur’an 16:116)
Ibn Taymiyyah also warned that even if a person speaks the truth, if it’s without knowledge, they are still considered a liar in the eyes of Allāh.
The Lesson
Islamic rulings are not based on personal opinions or cultural assumptions.
Before issuing a ruling or answering religious questions, speakers should be qualified and reference trustworthy scholars.
As students of knowledge and seekers of truth, it is our responsibility to verify before we share and to gently correct misunderstandings.
May Allah protect us from speaking without knowledge, guide us to beneficial understanding, and allow us to act upon the truth with humility and sincerity.
